In what was a truly challenging year, teams across James Hall & Co.  demonstrated amazing teamwork, creativity, determination, and lots of hard work. From transport to production, retail to trading, warehouse to office, departments across the company pulled together to meet the challenges of 2020 and ensure that communities across the north of England had access to essential products.

Here are some of the company’s highlights throughout 2020, from charity fundraising, to raising awareness of domestic abuse and child obesity, celebrating new store openings, company developments, and the launch of the Virtual SPAR Lancashire School Games.

January 2020


SPAR Chandler, which is a family run store in the Nidderdale Valley in Yorkshire, was delighted to receive a nomination for a Rural Oscar in the prestigious Countryside Alliance Rural Awards 2020.

February 2020

Leading fuel brand, Jet,  transformed two of its company owned, dealer operated sites with the latest SPAR store concept.

SPAR meets a surge in demand after the coronavirus pandemic reaches Great Britain and shoppers flock to stores to stock up.


April 2020

SPAR stores in England become the first convenience retailer to partner with Royal Voluntary Service on its NHS Volunteer Responders programme to ensure that vulnerable sectors of UK society had access to essential food and drink during the UK’s coronavirus lockdown.


James Hall & Co. launched a partnership with FareShare to ensure surplus stock from the company’s Preston depot reaches vulnerable communities across Lancashire and Cumbria.

May 2020


James Hall & Co. donates £250,000 to Royal Preston Hospital for a rest and recuperation zone to be built for NHS staff working long shifts in the face of coronavirus.

June 2020


SPAR removes 300 tonnes of plastic from packaging in line with the brand’s focus on corporate social responsibility.


SPAR Lancashire School Games hold a virtual celebration event to mark what would have been the games’ county finals at Stanley Park, Blackpool.
