14 SPAR stores across East Lancashire and the Ribble Valley are supporting the Ribble Valley Scrub Hub, a network of 60 volunteer sewers who are firing up their sewing machines to produce made-to-order PPE (personal protective equipment) for keyworkers across East Lancashire and the Ribble Valley.

National shortages and inflated prices have left many keyworkers without suitable protection across the county. Local business owner, Fiona Belcham, has been using her contacts in the textile industry to source material at wholesale cost, for sewers to make free PPE for NHS and critical care keyworkers across East Lancashire and the Ribble Valley.

Fiona explained, “All PPE items are made-to-order and we are receiving requests from hospitals, health centres, care homes and nurseries, with orders coming in on a daily basis.

“As well as making scrub sets and facemasks, we are also producing wash bags for staff to easily carry and wash their uniforms, minimising the risk of contaminating cars and home environments, and comfort headbands to ease the discomfort of wearing facemasks all day.”

Fiona added: “All of our sewers are offering their time for free but we do need help fundraising for materials and trimmings. Any money that is left over will be donated to NHS Practitioner Health, an organisation that offers support for bereavement, mental health and wellbeing.”
