The aisles of SPAR Oswaldtwistle were a bright shade of yellow last week as staff and customers came together to raise a spectacular £1500 for the cancer care charity, Marie Curie.
Staff from SPAR Oswaldtwistle donned yellow uniforms and daffodil hats, decorated the store with Marie Curie bunting and donation buckets, organised a raffle and took part in a 10hour sponsored silence, all with the aim of raising as much money as possible for the charity.
Staff really got behind the cause, donating their own hard earned monies for the raffle, with owners Nigel and Sue Masters then matching each donation to double the prize money. Sales Assistant Alex Moody volunteered for a 10 hour sponsored silence with Nicola Harwood running a BodyShop card scheme where customers paid £2 for the chance to win a £25 gift card.
Winners were then announced on SPAR Oswaldtwistle’s Facebook page, which has made the papers before with the store’s 2018 festive video of ’12 deals of Christmas’ going viral, reaching over 47,000 people on Facebook alone.
Owners Nigel and Sue are passionate supporters of the local community, regularly fundraising and involving the local community in their store activities.
Nigel said: “Marie Curie is SPAR UK’s champion charity and we consistently fundraise for them throughout the year. Their wonderful nurses support so many local families, we really wanted to make a special effort and show our appreciation – ‘Go Yellow’ was a great excuse to have fun and raise money for a great cause.”
One hour of care from a specialist Marie Curie nurse costs £20 and the charity needs to raise £4,460 every hour to cover the cost of Marie Curie’s entire nursing service across the UK.
Sue added: “The generosity of our customers has just been amazing, we are thrilled that through this week of fundraising, we have provided 75 hours of specialist care for someone in great need. Thank you so much to everyone who helped support our ‘Go Yellow’ week.”
