Gilberdyke Cricket Club has received £1,000 of funding through SPAR’s Community Cashback initiative.
The club, based at Ings View Sports Field in the village, currently has adult teams and a junior set up whose teams take part in the ECB All-Stars and Dynamos programmes.
Its committee are looking to build on that with the grant enabling the club to meet increased running costs while supporting the purchase of additional coaching equipment to improve the abilities of playing members.
Laura Swales, Head of Property and Acquisitions at Jos. Richardson & Son Ltd, owner of SPAR Gilberdyke, met playing members outside the village’s SPAR store to present the cheque for the grant funding.
Dave Mell, Chair of Gilberdyke Cricket Club, said: “The funding from SPAR through Community Cashback is a real help to the club. As a rural cricket club, we have limited access to funding streams, and the rate of price increases on everything is a problem for small village clubs like us so we are grateful to have been chosen as a recipient.
“We have been an integral part of the community since the club reformed in 1998. We deliver training, coaching, ECB programmes and matches for our current member with an age range of five to 73 years of age.
“With our proactive committee, we can make sure the club supports our members and people within our community, especially those that are currently struggling with the cost of living.”
SPAR Community Cashback returned more popular than ever in its fourth consecutive year and James Hall & Co. Ltd, SPAR’s primary retailer, wholesaler and distributor for the North of England, received 1,400 applications from charities and organisations across the North.
Nationally, more than 65 charities and local groups have shared a £100,000 grant fund this year, and since Community Cashback launched in 2021, grants have been awarded to nearly 200 organisations, highlighting SPAR’s long-term commitment in supporting local communities.
Laura Swales said: “It was lovely to have the opportunity to meet members of the cricket club outside the store and present a cheque for such a meaningful amount of money.
“SPAR Gilberdyke is one of the business’ most recent store additions and one of the reasons we were keen to acquire it as a company is because of its village location and its position at the heart of the community.
“Giving back is part and parcel of being a SPAR retailer, and Jos. Richardson & Son Ltd as a Yorkshire business with 135 years of heritage is very pleased to support the local community where we can.”
James Hall & Co. Ltd is a fifth-generation family business which serves a network of independent SPAR retailers and company-owned SPAR stores across Northern England six days a week from its base at Bowland View in Preston.
