The complete refurbishment of Formby’s much-loved Harington Road SPAR store is almost complete ahead of the store’s reopening on Thursday 8th December.

After months in the making, local residents will be able to see for themselves the £900,000 transformation of the store which has served the community in that area of Formby for 55 years.

The last 10 of those years has been under the ownership of fifth generation family-owned business James Hall & Co. Ltd, now based in Preston, but with its history rooted in Southport.

Harington Road’s SPAR has had a complete refit within its existing footprint plus a 900 sq. ft. extension into the adjacent unit next door, making the store a third bigger and taking the total size of its footprint to 2,700 sq. ft.

The Mayor of Sefton Cllr Clare Carragher will cut the ribbon to open the store before residents are invited in to take advantage of fantastic reopening deals.

The first 50 customers through the doors will get their ‘tea for free’ and residents will be receiving a series of £5 money-off coupons through the post in advance of the store opening.

A Christmas Fair is also due to be held on Saturday 10th December at the SPAR. The free event will run from 1pm until 3pm and will feature a local choir performance, a raffle, stalls, mince pies and mulled wine.

There is also facepainting and the opportunity to have a photo with the SPAR mascot while proceeds from the raffle will go to Marie Curie, SPAR’s national charity partner.

SPAR Harington Road’s opening hours are 7am-10pm seven days a week, and store features include a Graham Eyes butchers counter and a Clayton Park Deli, as well as Cheeky Coffee and Fanta Frozen machines for refreshment options.

There is also a comprehensive range of fresh foods, Food To Go, and major branded products, as well as beers and spirits, and an extended range of premium wines.

In line with SPAR’s brand pillars of Nurturing Our Neighbourhoods and Passionate About Local, the local community in Formby has been supported ahead of the launch day.

SPAR has agreed to sponsor the Formby Community Under-7s football kit and contribute raffle prizes to Autism Initiatives to boost the charity’s Christmas fundraiser.

Fiona Drummond, Company Stores Director at James Hall & Co. Ltd, said: “We know that our Harington Road SPAR store is treasured by the community, and we cannot wait to reopen the doors for our grand reveal.

“Local people have been expectant of an improved store and the transformation inside truly is amazing.

“Added to this, we have a range of value deals and opening specials to support our customers this festive season. Our relaunch at Harington Road promises to be a Christmas cracker.”

Customers are welcome to visit the store and pick up a free Cheeky Coffee voucher. These will be valid for two weeks from opening date, while vouchers last.

James Hall & Co. Ltd serves a network of independent SPAR retailers and company-owned SPAR stores across Northern England six days a week from its base at Bowland View in Preston.
