SPAR has donated £2,000 to Search Newcastle through its Community Cashback initiative.

Search is one of the oldest voluntary projects in Newcastle, having been set up in the mid-1970s to help the welfare of local older people.

At its core, Search offers advice and information and a wide range of community activities to older people living in the west of Newcastle, and last year 70 volunteers offered 7,570 hours of time to the cause.

James Hall & Co. Ltd, SPAR’s primary retailer, wholesaler and distributor for the North of England, received 3,000 applications alone from charities and organisations as Community Cashback returned more popular than ever in its third consecutive year since inception.

Chair of Trustees at Search Newcastle, Jenefer Bell, was on hand to receive the cheque from Chris McDonagh, Assistant Manager at SPAR Fenham.

Jenefer said: “We are very grateful to receive the funding from SPAR and this will make a real difference to Search. We are seeking funding to purchase an accessible minibus to improve our transport offer for older people in the area.

“Underpinning our work is the ambition to have a flexible transport offer for older people of all abilities who use our services, so we can support even more people. We are a thriving organisation and older people look forward to attending our activities such as lunch clubs, weekly shopping trips, social gatherings, and excursions.”

Philippa Harrington, Marketing Manager at James Hall & Co. Ltd, said: “We had a huge number of entries for SPAR’s Community Cashback this year and it meant selecting winners of the funding was an incredibly difficult decision-making process.

“We have a strong retail presence with several SPAR stores in the west of Newcastle and we know that a large percentage of our customers are from the older demographic. To support Search Newcastle felt like we were giving back to the customers who shop in our stores, and supporting an ambition that would contribute to improving lives perfectly aligned to why Community Cashback was established.”

James Hall & Co. Ltd is a fifth-generation family business which serves a network of independent SPAR retailers and company-owned SPAR stores across Northern England six days a week from its base at Bowland View in Preston.
